In a Republican primary season marked by political chaos, here's something that finally seems settled: Mitt Romney will win Tuesday's Florida primary. So say the latest public polls, several of which suggest Romney has a double-digit lead over Newt Gingrich. So say Romney supporters, who have delighted in discombobulating the former Speaker with a week of overwhelming force from all directions. And so say many Gingrich backers, who are already looking past Tuesday's contest to find states in which their candidate might live to fight another day.
Winning is always better than losing, of course, but a Florida victory would be particularly sweet for Romney. For months, his advisers prepared for scenarios in which Romney lost the Iowa caucuses and the South Carolina primary, relying instead on a Florida victory to fast-track his march to the nomination. But they didn't anticipate that Gingrich would be the one to win South Carolina or that a swirl of controversy over Romney's business background, tax payments, weak debate performances and moderate record as governor would accompany the loss. (PHOTOS: The Rich History of Mitt Romney)
Romney and his team have recovered in Florida by returning to attack mode and keeping the pressure on Gingrich. They have flooded the airwaves with TV and radio ads, released a phalanx of Establishment supporters to engage with the media, sent pro-Romney members of Congress to rattle Gingrich at his own campaign events, and debuted a more aggressive Romney on the stump and in the most recent debate. Even Romney's most optimistic backers could not have anticipated how thoroughly the former Speaker would be thrown off message by their assault. Just as in the weeks before the Iowa caucuses, Gingrich has faded rapidly in the polls and is now angrily defending himself against attacks that are accurate enough in parts to require a response and inaccurate enough in others to infuriate him.
However unlikely, Romney could still lose to Gingrich in Florida, which would make his path to the nomination much tougher. If his South Carolina loss was a grave test for the front runner, a Florida defeat would be a disaster, calling into question his viability as a general-election candidate. Many in the GOP Establishment would fear for Romney's chances against Barack Obama in the fall if Romney proved incapable of besting the underfunded Gingrich in a large battleground state.
But the reverse is also true: Republicans looking for a warrior to face off against Obama have been heartened by Romney's strong debate performances and his team's clinical take-down of Gingrich in Florida. Still, even with a win there, Romney faces major obstacles en route to the White House.
First, there is no indication Gingrich will give up any time soon. He's now talking about staying in all the way to the convention in Tampa, regardless of Tuesday's results, or, for that matter, those of the six electoral contests in February. Romney's dismantling of his opponent has been, in a way, too thorough: Attacked in TV ads paid for in part with Wall Street money, eviscerated in public by members of the Washington elite and disparaged in person by Romney himself, Gingrich will be indignant, irate and determined enough to fight on. And with more favorable contests in the South coming up in March, he may see no reason to exit the race, which is, after all, just beginning. (PHOTOS: Newt Gingrich's Life in Pictures)
Romney's campaign is determined not to repeat the mistakes it made after Iowa, when it became complacent about the Gingrich threat and shifted focus to the momentarily surging Rick Santorum. But Boston will have to carefully calibrate its attacks to ease Gingrich out of the race without alienating his supporters or provoking nuclear retaliation.
And Romney has his weaknesses. He still has a high unfavorable rating. In national polls, he continues to trail Gingrich. While he performs better than Gingrich against Obama in head-to-head matchups, he is beginning to slide as the President's approval ratings on the rise. Gingrich may be losing his momentum as he grapples with fundraising challenges and questions about his temperament, but Romney is failing to unite the party or attract independents.
Which leads to the second problem Romney now faces. Although he successfully defended his business record in last Thursday's debate, Romney has shown a vulnerability on the issue in recent weeks that has shaken his supporters. All sides have long known that Romney's work for -- and income from -- Bain Capital would be a symbolic issue in a general election, but his frequently tin-eared efforts to talk about it has left Democrats with a plateful of opposition goodies.
Add to that the disclosure of his 14% effective tax rate, curious financial holdings in the Cayman Islands and a recently closed Swiss bank account, and it is clear that President Obama's re-election campaign has picked up substantial political assets in the last few days. Indeed, even as Boston has eviscerated Gingrich, many Republicans have been unnerved by the sloppy way Romney and his team have handled his taxes, especially since they've had years to get Romney's fiscal house in order and to craft a response. Having funds in the Cayman Islands, regardless of whether they're fully taxed or under his control, is the kind of unforced error that can bury a candidate.
For now, Romney must grapple with the "oh-no!" factor. "Oh-no!" cried some Republicans after Gingrich won South Carolina, pondering the notion of the volatile former Speaker winning the nomination and driving the party to electoral ruin in November. Such visions prompted party luminaries like Bob Dole to hit Gingrich with maximum force. But if Romney claims victory in Florida on Tuesday, and the impatient media declares him the inevitable GOP nominee, shouts of "oh-no" will emanate from the right-leaning anti-Establishment. Sarah Palin, talk radio hosts and Tea Partyers, among other prominent conservatives, are not ready to crown a leader with Romney's record on health care, jobs and social issues.
So, starting on Wednesday morning, the questions hanging over the 2012 race will likely become: How will the once-and-current Republican front runner handle the incoming "oh-no!" wave from the right? And how will he juggle those concerns with the fresh resurgence of an incumbent President who's confident he can and will keep his job?

MOSCOW (AP) ? Thousands of cars flying white ribbons or balloons circled central Moscow on Sunday in a show of protest against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
The cars ? ranging from luxury sedans and sporty convertibles to old, exhaust-spewing Soviet models ? jammed the inner lanes all along the 16-kilometer (nearly 10-mile) Garden Ring, which has as many as 16 lanes of traffic at its widest points.
More protesters stood along the side of the road waving white ribbons and flags as the vehicles passed, their horns blaring. White ribbons became an opposition symbol during protests that broke out after a fraud-tainted Dec. 4 parliamentary election won by Putin's party.
Tens of thousands turned out for two protest rallies last month to demand free and fair elections, and protest organizers are now preparing for a third big demonstration Feb. 4.
Putin is running in a March 4 presidential election to reclaim the post he held from 2000 to 2008. He is expected to win, but is under pressure to show he can win fairly.
Sunday's action was aimed at helping to build momentum for the protest movement and it provided another outlet for the creativity that has been a defining feature of the demonstrations.
While most drivers were content to tie white ribbons and balloons to their cars' antennas, sideview mirrors and door handles, some decorated their vehicles with original signs and banners.
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny said the traveling protest action was a "wonderful advertisement" for the Feb. 4 rally.
The protest movement has been driven by young professionals, cultural figures and other members of the urban middle class, many of them connected through online social networks.
Kremlin supporters have begun to try to counter their activism by organizing rallies by blue-collar workers in support of Putin and the stability he promises. The first rally was held Saturday in Yekaterinburg, the capital of an industrial region in the Ural Mountains east of Moscow.
Videos of the rally posted online showed one speaker, a member of Russia's parliament, trying to get the crowd of several thousand to shout "Ural, Russia, Putin!" The response was muted.

COMMENTARY | Psychologists tell us that tension arises when one tries to hold two conflicting notions in the mind at the same. They call this phenomenon cognitive dissonance; sometimes -- it seems to me -- the term should apply when an individual acts in a way or says something that conflicts with the way he otherwise presents himself. This tense condition, however, never seems to afflict GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich -- although arguably it should.
Gingrich is selling himself as a conservative intellectual, the sort of deep thinker who can right our ship of state by applying imagination to the regular conservative agenda, including presumably fiscal conservatism. With that in mind, let's examine the candidate's remarks Wednesday to some voters on Florida's Space Coast.
As reported by The New York Times' Charles M. Blow, "Gingrich told a crowd ? that 'by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon. And it will be American.' And he said he would push for the introduction of a 'Northwest Ordinance for Space' so that when the number of colonists reached 13,000, they could petition for statehood."
Many Americans, and certainly most Republicans, have at least some level of discomfort with the current federal deficit, so the question begs: How much would this moon colony cost -- completing it before 2020, no less? In the current limping recovery from recession, why would a national politician even utter this idea aloud, even to the friendliest audience?
Second, notice what is being suggested in practical terms, to use that phrase as loosely as possible. Wouldn't Sens. Kirk and Spock of the great state of Moon Newton have to live in or near Washington to correctly represent their fellow, celestial Newtonians? Talk about a disconnect between elected officials and their constituents. Perhaps Sen. Kirk would roam the halls of Congress in a space helmet -- you know, just a reminder of his "home state" reality.
Well, Gingrich is a man who likes to remind us his mind frequently "goes where no man has gone before." We have fine institutions for such people. Not one is called the White House.

LOS ANGELES, Jan 27 (TheWrap.com) ? Sarah Jessica Parker will play feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the upcoming porn biopic "Lovelace."
The "Sex and the City" star will replace Demi Moore, who bowed out of the Millennium Films production after being hospitalized earlier this week and subsequently seeking treatment for what her publicist characterized as "exhaustion."
Moore split from her husband of six years, Ashton Kutcher, late last year amid media reports that he had been cheating on her.
The role of Steinem, a journalist who went undercover at the Playboy club, will be a cameo.
Also in the film: Chloe Sevigny, who will play Rebecca, a feminist journalist on assignment from a men's magazine to write a story about XXX actress Linda Lovelace.
Amanda Seyfried is playing the title role of Lovelace, who rose to fame in the breakthrough porn film "Deep Throat" but later condemned the industry, claiming that she had been coerced into performing.
"Lovelace" is being directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, whose credits include "Howl" and "The Celluloid Closet."

Apple's Steve Jobs directly asked former Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt to stop trying to recruit an Apple engineer, a transgression that threatened one junior Google employee's job, according to a court filing.
The 2007 email from Jobs to Schmidt was disclosed on Friday in the course of civil litigation against Apple, Google and five other technology companies. The proposed class action, brought by five software engineers, accuses the companies of conspiring to keep employee compensation low by eliminating competition for skilled labor.
In 2010, Google, Apple, Adobe Systems, Intel, Intuit and Walt Disney's Pixar unit agreed to a settlement of a U.S. Justice Department probe that bars them from agreeing to refrain from poaching each other's employees.
According to an unredacted court filing made public in the civil litigation on Friday, the now-deceased Jobs emailed Schmidt in March 2007 about an attempt by a Google employee to recruit an Apple engineer. Schmidt was also an Apple board member at the time.
"I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this," Jobs wrote.
Schmidt forwarded Job's email onto other, undisclosed recipients.
"Can you get this stopped and let me know why this is happening?" Schmidt wrote.
Google's staffing director responded that the employee who contacted the Apple engineer "will be terminated within the hour."
He added: "Please extend my apologies as appropriate to Steve Jobs."
Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said on Friday the company, "has always actively and aggressively recruited top talent."
Apple representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The tech defendants have asked a U.S. judge in San Jose, California to quickly dismiss the civil lawsuit, arguing that the companies engaged in bilateral anti-poaching deals to protect collaboration. The companies did not participate in an "overarching conspiracy," they argued in filings.
But at a court hearing this week, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said the civil lawsuit will proceed, although it may be split up into multiple potential class actions.
Among the revelations stemming from the civil litigation is a 2007 note from Palm's chief executive to Apple's Steve Jobs, saying that an anti-poaching agreement would be "likely illegal."
The latest court filing also refers to a 2007 note from Intel chief executive Paul Otellini discussing that company's agreement with Google.
"Let me clarify. We have nothing signed," Otellini wrote. "We have a handshake 'no recruit' between eric and myself. I would not like this broadly known."
Intel representative Sumner Lemon said on Friday the company, "disagrees with the allegations contained in the private litigation related to recruiting practices and plans to conduct a vigorous defense."
The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is In Re: High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation, 11-cv-2509.

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Andy Murray overcame an inconsistent serve to beat Kei Nishikori on Wednesday and reach the semifinals of the Australian Open for the third straight year.
The No. 4-ranked Murray won 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to join No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer in the semifinals. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic had a chance to complete a powerful final four later with a win over David Ferrer of Spain.
Nishikori, the first Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals here in the Open era, showed flashes of the form that earned him a surprise win over former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the previous round.
During the first set, Nishikori played a lob shot through his legs on his way to winning the point ? but by that time he was already a break down.
Murray, who hasn't dropped a set since the first round, broke seven times in all, although he plans to work on his serve after only managing a 44 percent success rate with his first serve.
"The returning was good, so that was positive," said Murray, who lost in the Australian Open final the last two years. "Could have served better, that's for sure."
Murray will face either Djokovic, who beat him in last year's final, or Ferrer on Friday. Federer and Nadal will meet for the 27th time in the other semifinal, scheduled for Thursday.
The women's semifinal matchups were completed Wednesday when former and reigning Wimbledon winners Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova both won in straight sets.
After Kvitova beat unseeded Italian Sara Errani 6-4, 6-4, Sharapova set up a repeat of last year's final at the All England Club with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
Kvitova beat Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in their last Grand Slam meeting to claim her first major title.
"Obviously, it was a tough one at Wimbledon," Sharapova said. "She's full of confidence and playing the best tennis right now. I look forward to it."
Sharapova and Kvitova also kept alive their chances of claiming the top ranking, which Caroline Wozniacki will vacate on Monday after her quarterfinal loss to Kim Clijsters.
To earn the No. 1 ranking, Sharapova must repeat her 2008 Australian Open title. Kvitova only has to match or better the run of Victoria Azarenka, the only other player still in the running this week for the No. 1 spot.
Sharapova has dropped one set and lost 21 games en route to her first Australian Open semifinal since she won the 2008 final ? the last of her three major titles.
"It's been a long road back to this stage," said Sharapova, sidelined for 10 months with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Kvitova was far from her best against an opponent making her debut in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, and with a 0-24 record against top 10 players. The second-seeded Czech made 44 errors and had to come back from a break down in the second set.
"I was a little nervous because I knew that everybody expect it will be easy match," Kvitova said. "Probably I had in my head that it's a good draw."
The other women's semifinal will feature defending champion Clijsters against third-seeded Azarenka. Those matches will be played Thursday along with the highly anticipated match between Federer and Nadal, who have 26 Grand Slam titles between them.
Federer beat 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday in his 1,000th tour-level match. Nadal rallied for a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-3 win over Tomas Berdych.
Their match on Thursday will be their 27th in all and 10th at a major, but their first in a Grand Slam semifinal since 2005.
Yelling "Vamos," disputing line calls, pumping his arms after winning big points and bounding around like a hyperactive kid, Nadal ripped winner after winner against Berdych in a 4-hour, 16-minute display of pure intimidation.
Federer finished his match with one of his classic, one-handed backhands against Del Potro, one of only two men who have beaten him in a major final. The other is Nadal, who has done it six times.
Thursday's match will be the first time Federer and Nadal have met at Melbourne Park since the Spaniard won the 2009 title in five seesawing sets. Nadal collected the trophy from the great Rod Laver after consoling Federer as he sobbed in the background.
"We are talking about a player who has won 16 Grand Slams, and I've won 10," Nadal said. "We have played a lot of matches together, many in very important moments for our careers. So the matches against him are always special, even if we are (ranked) 20 against 25."

SAN FRANCISCO?? YouTube, Google Inc's video website, is streaming 4 billion online videos every day, a 25 percent increase in the past eight months, according to the company.
The jump in video views comes as Google pushes YouTube beyond the personal computer, with versions of the site that work on smartphones and televisions, and as the company steps up efforts to offer more professional-grade content on the site.
According to the company, roughly 60 hours of video is now uploaded to YouTube every minute, compared with the 48 hours of video uploaded per minute in May.
YouTube, which Google acquired for $1.65 billion in 2006, represents one of Google's key opportunities to generate new sources of revenue outside its traditional Internet search advertising business.
Last week, Google said that its business running graphical "display" ads ? many of which are integrated alongside YouTube videos ? was generating $5 billion in revenue on an annualized run rate basis.
Still, most of the 4 billion videos that YouTube now streams worldwide every day do not make money. Three billion YouTube videos a week are monetized, according to the company.
YouTube recently redesigned its website to more prominently showcase specialized "channels" organized around different types of content. In October, YouTube announced that it had struck 100 original video programming deals with media partners including Madonna and Jay-Z.

COMMENTARY | Today marks 39 years since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. NARAL, the largest and oldest organization dedicated to protecting the rights of American women, says that in the last year it has had to combat more attacks on these rights than ever before, according to the Washington Post. If the women's-rights-hating republican candidates have their way it won't last much past year 40.
Ron Paul's campaign site clearly states he is a "life begins at conception" candidate. He would pass a "Sanctity of Life Act," making his belief law, given the chance. It makes me wonder if his "life is sacred" stance would apply to death row inmates as well. It also makes me wonder, since Paul is a gynecologist, if he is aware that such a measure would outlaw many current forms of birth control, such as "the pill."
Rick Santorum's site takes it further. Santorum wants to make sure you have a hard time getting your health insurer to cough up a referral for an abortion, much less pay for one. Health insurers are known for their altruism and commitment to patients before profits -- oh, wait, no they aren't. They're for-profit entities and could well use Santorum's legislation to find another way to avoid paying for patient care so they can fatten their profit margins.
Newt Gingrich's site says he will defund Planned Parenthood. He also wants to ensure medical and insurance personnel can place their personal views ahead of contractual obligations to female patients. I guess he doesn't care about the health of lower-income women.
Mitt Romney's site is silent on this issue. True to form he has flip-flopped on the matter from pro-choice to pro-life, according to NPR.
If you are pro-choice and want to see Roe v. Wade survive past the 2013 inauguration your best bet is to vote for Obama. The right-wing candidates have promised to abort your right to choose. These misogynistic men should never be given the chance to legislate women's freedom away.

NEW YORK ? Charla Krupp, a popular author and commentator on fashion and beauty whose best-sellers included "How Not to Look Old" and "How to Never Look Fat Again," has died at age 58.
Krupp's husband, Richard Zoglin, said she died Monday of breast cancer at their home in Manhattan.
Krupp made numerous television appearances over the years. According to her publisher, the Hachette Book Group, she was on NBC's "Today" show more than 100 times and was featured on Oprah Winfrey's syndicated talk program and on ABC's "Good Morning America" and "The View."
As entertainment editor for Glamour magazine, she interviewed Meryl Streep, Madonna and other celebrities. She also wrote for Time magazine, USA Today, Town & Country and many other publications and had a second run at Glamour as beauty editor.
Her husband called her "a pioneering journalist, a champion of women and an amazing life force."
"She touched millions of women, and I'm sure they share my loss," Zoglin, a theater critic for Time, said in a statement.
Krupp was born and raised in Wilmette, Ill., and majored in journalism at the University of Illinois.
Hachette announced that the Krupp and Zoglin families had established the Charla Krupp Memorial Fund for Women in Media at the University of Illinois College of Media.

CLAREMORE, Okla. ? Country singer Garth Brooks told jurors Friday that he believed he had a "done deal" to honor his late mother with a women's health center in his Oklahoma hometown, and said he still doesn't understand how he received nothing for a $500,000 gift.
Brooks is suing Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon, accusing it and its president of reneging on a pledge to build the center and name it after his mother, Colleen, who died of cancer in 1999. The center was never built, and Brooks wants his money back, plus punitive damages.
In tearful testimony, Brooks said he thought he had a solid agreement with the hospital's president, James Moore. Brooks said Moore initially suggested putting his mother's name on an intensive care unit, and when Brooks said that wouldn't fit her image, Moore suggested a women's center.
"I jumped all over it," Brooks told jurors. "It's my mom. My mom was pregnant as a teenager. She had a rough start. She wanted to help every kid out there."
Brooks said he gave $500,000 to the hospital anonymously, which he said was his custom when giving to charities. The singer said he, his family and the hospital wanted to keep things quiet until a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the center.
He was eventually shown architectural drawings of a proposed center bearing his mother's name. "That's why I thought it was a win-win for everybody," Brooks said.
But nothing happened. The center was never build and his mother's name wasn't attached to anything.
"How this thing went wrong, I don't know," Brooks testified.
"I'm the last of six kids. I was her favorite," Brooks added. "She was my buddy. I was her biggest fan. She was a pistol. All of the parties were at her house. She was just a doll. If anybody met her, (they) would have gotten to love her."
Moore testified earlier this week that a women's center was not among the hospital's plans, though Brooks testified Friday that Moore never told him that while they were negotiating a gift.
The singer donated the money in 2005. Three years later, he exchanged emails with Moore after the hospital president wrote saying the money would be used to help fund new construction, Brooks said.
"As nicely as I can, I'm trying to give him an opportunity to say why he's spending the money and there's no women's center going up," Brooks testified.
Brooks said he sent his accountant to investigate, but that nothing came from the ongoing correspondence.
By March 2009, he'd asked the hospital to either refund his money or give it to another charity. In September 2009, Brooks sued.
"I thought this was going to be mom's chance to bring a women's center to my hometown," Brooks testified.
Brooks' accountant, Cheryl Harris, testified earlier Friday that she wasn't aware of any conditions on Brooks' donation, which was listed as a tax deduction. Asked by Integris lawyer Terry Thomas how she believed the money would be used, she said, "He didn't receive anything physical."

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration has recommended canceling deportation proceedings for more than 1,600 illegal immigrants in Denver and Baltimore not considered a national security or public threat, a DHS official said Thursday.
The recommendations come after a review of 11,682 pending cases involving illegal immigrants not jailed by federal authorities as part of an Obama administration pledge to focus deportation efforts on criminal illegal immigrants and those who pose a national security or public safety threat.
According to preliminary figures shared with The Associated Press, 7,923 cases were reviewed in Denver and officials recommended closing 1,301. In Baltimore, 366 of the 3,759 cases reviewed were recommended for closure.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the preliminary data has not been released publicly, said the recommendation to cancel the deportation case hinges on the immigrants being cleared by a final and extensive background check that will include the use of biometric data such as fingerprints.
"We wanted to triple check" everyone's background before halting a deportation case, the official said.
Starting in early December, the immigration court dockets in Denver and Baltimore were suspended while officials did a "deep dive" of the entire backlog of pending deportations. Meanwhile, cases in other jurisdictions were also reviewed, though data on those reviews has not been released.
The Obama administration announced in August that roughly 300,000 pending deportation cases would be reviewed and non-criminals and those illegal immigrants who don't pose a public safety or national security threat were likely to have their cases put on hold indefinitely. In June, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton issued a memo outlining when authorities could use discretion in deciding which illegal immigrants to arrest and put into deportation proceedings.
Critics of the review and the discretion policy have said President Barack Obama is circumventing Congress to change immigration policies.
In a statement Thursday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith again called the policies "backdoor amnesty."
"The results from the pilot programs show that President Obama's backdoor amnesty only works for illegal immigrants, not Americans," Smith said. "Nearly 2,000 illegal and criminal immigrants in Denver and Baltimore have been granted backdoor amnesty that allows them to remain in the U.S. and apply for work authorization. And this administration routinely grants work authorization to 90 percent of illegal immigrants when their cases have been administratively closed."
The DHS official said that only illegal immigrants who would have been eligible to apply for a work permit before their deportation case was suspended will now be eligible. The official did not say how many people may be eligible.
"If you can apply for a work permit under existing law, you can apply now," the official said, adding that closure of the deportation case will not automatically qualify someone for a work permit.
Immigrants whose cases are closed won't gain legal status and could once again face deportation if they commit a crime or become a security threat, the official said.
The nationwide review is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. The official said the number of cases recommended for closure is likely to vary by court jurisdiction.

MEXICO CITY ? They look like images from a science fiction movie, gigantic white roots invading emblematic spots around the Mexican capital, crawling across stone plazas and snaking from windows of colonial buildings.
"Raices," or "Roots," is a new public exhibit by Mexican artist Rivelino, designed to provoke reflection about the nation's past.
Collectively weighing about 28 metric tons, and extending three-quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometers) in length, the roots are manufactured with an interior of steel and covered in polyurethane and fiberglass.
The exhibit was inaugurated Wednesday night and will be on display through the end of February at 14 historic sites around the city including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, or Fine Arts Palace, and the National Museum of Art.
Some of the roots are installed at the Plaza of Three Cultures, which brings together elements of Mexico's indigenous past, the Spanish conquest and the modern mix of the two. The plaza was the site of a 1968 government massacre of students and other protesters.
"It's about questioning who we are; it's about trying to make a point about historical events," said Rivelino, whose full name is Jose Rivelino Moreno Valle.
Other sites being used include the 18th century Corpus Christi Convent and the Revolution Monument.
Installation of the exposition took more than 48 continuous hours of work and the help of 250 previously trained volunteers.
Alejandra Gilling, coordinator of open galleries for Mexico City's Culture Department, said "Raices" is the largest exposition installed in the capital since the capital's public art program was launched in 2006.
"Raices" follows "Nuestros Silencios," or "Our Silences," another monumental work that Rivelino installed in 2011 in the Zocalo, Mexico City's central plaza. It had been displayed earlier in various European cities over two years.
"Nuestros Silencios" explored freedom of expression through 10 bronze sculptures weighing about a ton each.
Rivelino says "Raices" is a natural outgrowth of the previous project. While he characterizes "Nuestros Silencios" as a closed emotion, he says Raices "is completely open."
The project cost about 8 million (nearly $600,000) and was financed without any public funds ? a major reason it gained government support.
"Rivelino presented us with a project that was 100 percent financed," Gilling said. "It seems to us that it has quality, that it's going to have a great impact on the public."

Despite a self-imposed blackout yesterday to protest SOPA/PIPA, Wikipedia's English?language website?attracted more traffic on Wednesday than the previous day, and millions learned about the proposed legislation.
In the 24 hours Wikipedia blacked out its content (though, as we told you yesterday, there were ways of getting around that), more than 162 million viewed the Wikipedia home page, through which more than eight million looked up their elected representatives' contact information via the tool provided there. (You can also?find out via this U.S. House of Representatives link.)
As a result of Wikipedia and other efforts pointing voters to state reps, congressional websites?were overwhelmed with traffic ? enough to shut them down temporarily. By the end of the day, 18 senators?defected to the other side of PIPA, no longer supporting it.
Wikipedia also found that, "At one point,#wikipediablackout constituted 1% of all tweets, and?SOPA accounted for a quarter-million tweets hourly during the blackout."
In its post mortem?of the blackout's effects, Wikipedia offers a FAQ for those interested in following the progress of SOPA and PIPA, which it says is not dead, "not at all." One answer sums up Wikipedia's position on the proposed legislation: "These bills are presented as efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but in our opinion, they do so in a way that would disrupt free expression and harm the Internet."
More than 12,700 have commented on Wikipedia's blog post announcing the blackout.
Security company Zscaler?tracked a "noticeable" uptick in unique visitors to the online encyclopedia in the first 8 hours of the Jan. 18, though "these additional visitors are not incurring that much more bandwidth for Wikipedia" in that there was "only a slight percentage increase in Wikipedia web transactions today." So, people weren't going to Wikipedia to dilly dally?? they spent time on fewer entries. At least in the first half of the day. (I'm sure news accounts like ours helped fill in the missing pieces.)
The top visited pages yesterday, besides the home page, was?? wait for it?? the SOPA initiative, as people were probably trying to figure out why they were being blocked from easy access to Wikipedia. Zscaler dubbed such behavior as "online rubber necking." (I call it normal curiosity.)
Zscaler
Another set of statistics shows the dramatic interest in SOPA that culminated in yesterday's online stampede to find out more about it. A Lithuania-based database engineer at Facebook,?Domas Mituzas, who also does software development for Wikipedia, "put together a system to gather access statistics from Wikipedia's squid cluster" and a visualization of that data appears on this site.
There, you can search for any article in Wikipediaand find out how many page views it had in whatever month you choose in the drop down menu. For Jan. 2012, searches for SOPA on Wikipedia led to the article being viewed 653,058 times this month. On Jan. 18, it was viewed nearly 463,000 times, so that one day accounted for most of the views so far this month. As you can see from the chart below, the page views on the day before, the 17th, was only 112,170.

Based on our informal poll from yesterday, the overwhelming majority of you weren't annoyed with the lack of easy access to Wikipedia yesterday (81 percent of 1,355 votes). Obviously, those who wanted to get to it got to it yesterday, one way or another.
(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and Comcast/NBC Universal. Microsoft publicly opposes SOPA in its current form, while?Comcast/NBC Universal is listed as a supporter of SOPA?on the House Judiciary Committee website.)

HEATHROW HEAVE-HO: The new airport would effectively replace Heathrow, London's current long-haul hub. The airport handles 65 million passengers annually, making it Europe's busiest, but longstanding plans to build a third runway there were scrapped following a drawn-out and acrimonious debate with local residents and environmental groups.
READY FOR TAKEOFF: The airport would be built about 40 miles southeast of central London. A proposal recently published by London-based Foster & Partners envisions a multi-runway facility on a marshy, sparsely populated peninsula at the edge of the estuary. It would be linked to London by a four-track, high-speed train line which would plug into the Channel tunnel rail link and a planned high-speed line to Birmingham, England.

LONDON (Reuters) ? Mass euro zone ratings downgrades are unlikely to shake up investors too much, but with Greek debt talks at an impasse, pressure has been loaded on the bloc to shore up its defenses and glimmers of optimism from last week have been firmly doused.
With the United States and Japan already downgraded from "AAA," the likes of France and Austria are in good company and Standard & Poor's ratings cuts had been flagged in December. Nonetheless, the upbeat tone that surrounded last week's strong Spanish bond auction now seems a distant memory.
"The euro zone crisis is now dominating market activity again, after a period in which better economic news from the U.S., and easier monetary policy in China had helped markets move higher," said Dominic Rossi, chief investment officer, equities, at Fidelity Worldwide Investment.
Shares in Asia fell more than 1 percent on Monday in reaction to the S&P downgrades and the euro hovered near a 17-month low against the dollar.
U.S. markets are closed for the Martin Luther King holiday, but the euro zone will not have to wait long for a test of investor appetite.
France will attempt to sell up to 8 billion euros of debt on Thursday and Spain will tap the market again after a successful bond auction last week where it raised twice as much as expected at lower borrowing costs.
Analysts put that success down to the flood of cheap 3-year money the European Central Bank pushed into the banking system in December. It will make the same offer in February, fostering hopes that it can avert a credit crunch and helped bolster struggling euro zone debt issuers to boot.
ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny said on Sunday the central bank would do all it could to calm the situation after the downgrade.
"Everything that is within our possibilities will be done to bring about a relaxation (of the situation)," he said on television in Austria.
But the twin blows of the serial S&P downgrades and the stalled Greek bond swap talks have cast another pall of gloom. This time, Spain will try to sell longer-term debt, which could be tougher.
"While the market impact of the downgrades is unlikely to be very significant in the short term, they serve as a stark reminder that the euro area sovereign crisis is here to stay," analysts at RBS said. "We continue to expect the crisis to deepen eventually leading to further widening in spreads across countries vis-a-vis Germany."
After downgrading nine of the euro zone's 17 countries, S&P said it would decide shortly whether to do the same for the currency area's EFSF bailout fund. Ratings cuts for commercial banks are probably imminent too.
"Speculation around an EFSF downgrade will now grow, complicating its ability to raise capital and displace the ECB in the sovereign bond purchasing program," Rossi said. "Both the ECB and the IMF will get sucked further into central roles."
A senior euro zone official said the EFSF could retain its AAA rating with Standard & Poor's through higher guarantees from the euro zone's remaining triple A countries or lower lending capacity.
Still, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on German radio on Monday that German guarantees for the EFSF were sufficient.
Negotiations with the banks on a bond swap scheme designed to eat into Greece's colossal debts are expected to restart on Wednesday with Athens warning of catastrophe if they fall apart.
Without a deal, a planned 130 billion euro Greek bailout of which the bond swap is a vital part will be fundamentally holed, raising the prospect of default in March when massive bond payments are due. That, rather than the long-anticipated S&P downgrades, looks to be the bigger worry for investors.
"At this stage, there is a growing risk of a coercive rather than voluntary debt restructuring, even though the latter is still our base case," said Joachim Fels, economist at Morgan Stanley.
SENSE OF URGENCY
Euro zone leaders do seem to be gripped with a sense of urgency although they have failed for nearly three years to get on the top of the sovereign debt crisis born in Greece.
Rather than launch a broadside at S&P, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday said she and her fellow leaders must act more swiftly to impose common fiscal rules and get a permanent rescue fund up and running.
"Although nobody is excited about the S&P decision, the step may actually help to get a quick agreement on the fiscal compact," a German government official said.
While not expecting a euro zone break up, S&P blamed its leaders for focusing too much on cutting debts and not sufficiently on competitiveness and growth.
The ratings agency, and many economists, say austerity for its own sake will be self-defeating - deepening economic downturns and cutting government revenues needed to lower debt.
"Market participants are worried about a vicious circle in which they tighten, growth weakens, the deficits get bigger despite the efforts to tighten," said Jim O'Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
The concerns were echoed by IMF Deputy Managing Director David Lipton, who said EU action was needed.
"Without.... action, Europe will be swept into a downward spiral of collapsing confidence, stagnant growth and fewer jobs," he said at a conference in Hong Kong on Monday.
Ahead of an EU summit on January 30 which will attempt to alight upon a growth strategy, shuttle diplomacy continues apace this week.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy sees Spain's Mariano Rajoy in Madrid on Monday. Italian premier Mario Monti visits Britain's David Cameron in London on Wednesday, then hosts Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Rome at the end of the week.
Aside from Greece it is Italy, facing massive bond repayments over the next three months, which poses the biggest threat to the euro zone. It was downgraded two notches by S&P.
"More than the moves on France and Austria, which are relatively symbolic and to a large extent reflected in prices already, the Italian downgrade might be key going forward," said Laurent Fransolet at Barclays Capital.
"Italy is at BBB+ now by S&P, but is on watch negative by Fitch and on negative outlook by Moody's and therefore some further downgrades are likely."
The more upbeat view is that, in the end, Europe's leaders will not allow the whole edifice to collapse, despite German and ECB reservations about many of the policy options. But even optimists say uncertainty will reign for some time.
"Some day the markets will wake up and see that Europe is not going to allow a collapse. If they get through the next six months, you can see the tide turning. Sentiment changes very rapidly," said John Fitzgerald of the Economic and Social Research Institute, a Dublin-based think tank, who also sits on the board of the Irish central bank.
Europe is the biggest threat to the global economy, JP Morgan's chief executive Jamie Dimon told German newspaper Die Welt's Sunday edition. "I thought Europe would muddle through. I still believe that," he was quoted as saying.
