Netflix teases original movies, would debut on service, in theaters, same day. Swoon.

Netflix, which has found enormous success - and viewer affection - with original series like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, is reportedly now considering some original movies as well. And yes, they'd debut on Netflix's service - including iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV - day and date with theatrical release. Netflix's Ted Sarandos, as quote by Peter Kafka on AllThingsD:

“What we’re trying to do for TV, the model should extend pretty nicely to movies. Meaning, why not premiere movies on Netflix, the same day they’re opening in theaters? And not little movies — there’s a lot of ways, and lot of people to do that [already]. Why not big movies? Why not follow the consumers’ desire to watch things when they want?”

I've often wondered if anything short of an extinction level event would be enough to change Hollywood's seeming unwillingness to embrace the future. Seems like maybe Netflix could be just that meteorite hurtling towards them. Even if it misses, even if it just buzzes or bounces off their upper atmosphere, fear can be a wonderful motivator for change.

Let's hope Hollywood is, at the very least, smart enough to be afraid.
