Coraline director Henry Selick has signed on to direct A Tale Dark & Grimm, a live-action film based on Adam Gidwitz's children's novel.

Inspired by the Grimm fairy tales, the story follows two children who run away from their own dark fairy tale in hopes of finding a happier life, but they end up landing in eight other terrible tales.

John W. Mann and Jon Gunn (who also penned upcoming film B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations) adapted the screenplay with Selick to contribute to the script.

Selick has plenty of experience bringing darker children's stories to life. An expert at stop-motion, he also helmed A Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach.

Marissa McMahon of Kamala Films will finance the development and produce along with FilmNation Entertainment’s Aaron Ryder and Karen Lunder.

Selick is repped by Ellen Goldsmith Vein of the Gotham Group and George Davis of Nelson Davis Wetzstein LLP.

FilmNation's robust upcoming sales lineup also includes: Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson; Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups; Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams; and Tracers, starring Taylor Lautner.
