The other day my wife Beth and I were discussing time management.? She made the comment that everyone should have the experience of billing hours as a Paralegal.? In her first job for a law firm, she was required to bill 37.5 hours per week.? If you did not give that too much thought, that sounds reasonable.? On further review, it is a lot!?? To begin with, not everything you do for a client can be billed.? Second, there is the assumption that there is always work ready to go and that she, in this case, would take zero time to switch from one project to another. Next consider that if you wanted a break, that was not billable.? You get the idea.
When I was working with employees that were struggling to get their work done, one tool I would use would be to have the employee write down their accomplishments every thirty minutes for a week.? While somewhat onerous, this exercise hopefully allows the employee to reflect on the number of times they did not accomplish anything at all for 30 minutes.? The key is we have to be responsible for our own time.? It is also somewhat amazing to see just how much you can get done when you hold your self accountable at this level
